Sponsorship, Advertising Vending Enhancement (SAVE)
September 1st marked the launch of the new Sponsorship, Advertising Vending Enhancement program at Virginia's Rest Areas and Welcome Centers.The enhancement and expansion of services and information under SAVE means existing programs are continuing, and new programs are being added. SAVE allows additional resources, staff and funding to be provided by the private sector, allowing Virginia Tourism's existing programs and services to continue and expand.
These private sector investments will also give Virginia's tourism businesses expanded opportunities to distribute tourism brochures and electronic information to travelers, 24-hours a day. With the tourism brochure program, businesses will now have 'one-stop' enrollment process for Welcome Centers and Rest Areas. Participants will have the option of shipping brochures to a single location for distribution and warehousing. Invoicing any payment is also simplified with a single point of contact.
In early 2012 Wi-Fi internet access for travelers is targeted to launch at pilot Welcome Centers and Rest Areas. This Wi-Fi service will have sponsorship opportunities for Virginia's DMOs, local Visitor Centers and Virginia tourism businesses.
SAVE allows testing of new services and messaging at the rest areas and welcome centers. In late 2011, testing began with vending machine sales of Virginia Is For Lovers souvenirs, admission tickets to Virginia attractions, museums and events, and vending sales of "Virginia's Finest" products.
ATMs are being launched in Welcome Centers, providing travelers and truck operators with expanded access to cash.. SAVE is also taking advantage of revisions to Federal Highway Administration regulations that now allow Rest Areas and Welcome Centers to display limited business sponsorship signage.. Sponsorship development is being handled by Travelers Marketing; of Ortlando, Florida. Travelers Marketing has already implemented travel plaza and traveler services sponsorship programs in more than nine states.
